An evening of magic with David
Minkin!
Discovering the
magical talents of David Minkin is like sampling a fine wine. If you
wonder why you've seen him before, perhaps you recognize the magician
and actor from the TV series, "Room 401." International
Brotherhood of Magicians Gold medal recipient David Minkin seems an
unlikely candidate for show business, though he could easily pass for
one of the cast members of "Friends". Holding a Master of Physical
Therapy degree from California State University-Northridge, and a B.S.
in Business from UC Riverside, the educated and handsome man easily
holds his own in any arena, but those who have watched him perform say
that his act is pure magic.
Lighting up the stage
with his smile, the Los Angeles performer has wowed guests to his shows
around the globe, but its the star-studded A-list of celebrities often
in his audience that make you realize this guy is something special.
Minkin has been practicing the art of illusion for over a decade and
couldn't be happier than when he's delighting guests to his show. Among
those he's entertained, Depp, Reiner and Fonda are several of a long
list actors, producers, musicians and writers that rave about his
performance. Sin City director Robert Rodriguez, Seth Rogen, Marilyn
Manson, Pink, Jason Biggs, Chris Slade, AC/DC, Felicity Huffman &
William H. Macy, and Teri Hatcher have all watched him either in Malibu
or at the Magic Castle in Hollywood. Minkin says that the intimate Beau
Rivage in Malibu is the ideal setting to watch him perform just inches
or feet away from the audience.
Interview with David Minkin
David, with your
education and background, what led you to magic performances?
A friend showed me a simple bit of magic with a cup and ball one day,
and it reset my sense of reality. It was so intriguing that I asked him
to teach it to me. I found that I enjoyed performing magic more than
anything else, and several years later, I was doing it professionally.
It was an uncertain career path to take, but I'm glad I made that
choice.
I notice that your shows
uplift, entertain, and seem to enhances the lives of others. How does
that work?
Magic can actually be therapeutic. There's something about the dance
between believing and not believing that gives people a rare feeling. It
makes them gasp and laugh, but that's not all. If it's presented right,
it can inspire people and touch deeper places. With everything going on
in the world right now, magic is a much-needed escape... a chance to
feel that anything is possible.
I try to present magic in such a way that the question of whether or not
it's "real" becomes irrelevant, because the experience itself is so
valuable. It's a healthy dose of mystery wrapped in a variety of
contexts. Some are light and fun and playful, and others are deeper and
more thoughtful.
If I had to sum up the "Evening of Enchantment" in one sentence it would
be this: It's like 'Disneyland' for adults who enjoy wine and magical
experiences.
