Annual Surf Dog Competition is held in Del Mar, where the
surf meets the turf. No, it isn't home to dog races, but it is home
to horse racing, and doggy surfing contests.
Surf Dogs Annual Surf
Dog Surf-A-Thon in Del Mar
The third annual Surf
Dog Surf-A-Thon is held in September at Dog Beach in Del Mar. It's a
benefit for an animal center, and funds raised will help support
worthy doggy causes for Helen Woodward Animal Center. Any day is a
good time to spend with your dog at Dog Beach but on this day, the
fun never stops.
Hundred dogs, thousands of people and sunshine greeted last year's
entries to the lively and wet event. Surf Dog Surf-A-Thon
HWAC spokesman John Van Zante said that while the entries are
growing (last year around 60 dogs / 150 people -- over 2 people for
every dog, the crowd swell is in the thousands. One of the most
popular events to watch, people delight in seeing dogs hit the water
for a hang 20 experience. All proceeds going directly back to
support the programs and services at Helen Woodward Animal Center.
In addition to the four-pawed surfers, prizes will also be awarded
for human surfers with the Longest Wave, Best Trick, and Gnarliest
Wipe-Out as determined by world champion surfer Guy Takayama and
judges from Swami’s Surfing Association.
Prizes will be awarded for surfers who raise the most money. The
Grand Prize for the top fundraiser will be an all-expense paid surf
trip for two to an exotic destination. The team that raises the most
money will win a trip for six to surfing hot spot Las Gaviotas.
“Dry land” activities will include the Canine Costume Contest when
pups strut the “dogwalk” as celebrity judges pick this year’s Beach
Bum and Bikini Babe Title Champs. Pat Webber and San Diego Surfing
Academy will join Helen Woodward Animal Center, Pro surfer Guy
Takayama, and Rob Kuty from San Diego Pet Training to teach Doggie
Surf Clinics at 10:00 and 11:00 AM August 9th and 23rd in Del Mar.
