Route 66 Mother Road Museum is located in
the historic Casa del Desierto, Harvey House, in Barstow, California. The Museum
displays a collection of historic photographs and artifacts relating to Route 66
and the Mojave Desert communities. Displays include development of Route 66 from
its beginning along early pioneer trails, to its genesis during the construction
and popularity of railroads. Finally the automobile brought Route 66 to
maturity. The museum covers the history of this famous route immortalized in
songs & movies and in popular culture.
When rail passenger service was the preferred mode of transportation, Barstow
boasted a splendid complex called the "Casa del Desierto", House of the Desert.
Completed in 1911, Casa del Desierto included a train depot with a restaurant
and hotel included in this integrated property. Built by the Atchinson, Topeka,
and the Santa Fe Railway Company along its right-of-way and operated by the Fred
Harvey Company, this was one of four such properties in the United States known
as Harvey House(s). These predecessors to today's entertainment centers
