Antioch, California Information


Antioch in Contra Costa County (San Francisco Bay Area's East Bay), is one of California's oldest cities and as such, has weathered pretty well, all things considered. Once considered the affordable Contra Costa residential area, prices have gone up on housing recently as the city invested heavily in redevelopment. Several shopping centers with anchor stores, the courting of businesses from nearby cities where real estate prices are higher, and preservation of the downtown Rivertown are all are ingredients to also bring tourists to the region. While the tourist attractions in Antioch are limited, nearby Concord has a water park that's open during the summer months.

Within an hours drive (give or take 20 minutes,) Antioch is centrally located to San Francisco, Napa, Sacramento and Stockton, four business centers and tourism destinations in Northern California.

Several highlights to a visit to Antioch are the El Campanil Theatre, named for its prominent tower bells, and nearby Vallejo, with an historical point of interest. At the Campanil Theatre, Roy Rogers, Edgar Bergen, Clark Gable, the Three Stooges, Al Jolson, Debbie Reynolds and Gene Autry have all performed live there. Current concerts and productions include musical performances with R&B, jazz, live comedy, symphony, plays and movies. Antioch is on the outskirts of California's Central Valley region, but within easy access to many destinations. Located in Contra Costa County, Antioch is a thriving residential community and gateway to the Delta. The Delta is the meeting point of two major waterways, the Sacramento River and the San Joaquin River as they come together to flow into the Pacific Ocean. Antioch has a lovely downtown tourists enjoy strolling through. Downtown's Rivertown hosts an annual 4th of July celebration, plus serves as the core of the downtown business region with shops, dining and services. One of the tourist highlights that Antioch is known for is the Contra Costa County Fairgrounds, home of the annual Contra Costa COunty Fair, held usually in just before summer officially begins.
