Avalon on Catalina Island is comparable to Club Med. Tantalizing and beckoning, mainland visitors and Southern California residents look most days out to the sea and notice in the west an island situated some 20 to 30 miles away from L.A. Getting to Catalina's Avalon, the big city where the hotels ae located, takes about an hour by Catamaran boat, and is our first choice. You can also fly over to the island, which costs a lot more and takes nearly as much time after you factor in your 15-20 minute flights and trip from the airport into the city.
Once you arrive in Avalon, you can take island tours, explore the Green Pleasure Pier, rent a golf cart, visit Wrigley Gardens or just sunbathe at the beach.
The hotels on Avalon are mostly privately owned and are generally small hotels. While the excitement of a day or several in Avalon is relaxing, don't expect the nightlife of Los Angeles, San Diego or San Francisco. Avalon is a mellow little island beach town that relaxes at night and sticks to simple pleasures such as a nice meal or cuddling up to your loved ones and watching the stars in the sky. While you may find a trio playing in a coffee shop or small club, or can watch a movie at the local theater, your best bet for entertainment is on the special events weekends with marathons, ballroom dances, and fireworks shows.
Many prefer daytripping to Avalon, but there's really something special about an overnighter on the isolated island out in the Pacific Ocean, an oasis celebrities have visited and enjoyed since the time of silent films during the romance era of California getaways.
