Encinitas is an old fashioned beach town with a laid back beach atmosphere. Roll back the clock when you drive down Coast Highway 101 from L.A. or Orange County to Encinitas. With lots of eucalyptus trees kind of hovering over the road, you get that warm and fuzzy feeling like you're in a real town. Surf shops, surfing signs warning you to watch for surfers crossing the road, and a big sign that greets you to Encinitas as you drive under the arch are part of this very beach community's charms. Sure, you may find top CEO's from large corporations living here in houses overlooking the Pacific Ocean. But don't be surprised if you surf next to them at the beach, in this very understated North San Diego County city. Encinitas is a city of contrasts, old and new. On one side of Coast Highway you have the beach and all its charms. It will surely make you fall in love with the word Encinitas, and make you want to pack up and move. Then there's the thoroughly modern portion of town that can throw you into shell shock. We parked at a shopping center with a Starbucks and as I stood in line to get an iced latte, I heard in stereo in front of me in line and behind me two similar girls both in their 20's talking on cell phones to people they knew and trying to arrange times to meet. That's the part of Encinitas that I can take or leave, even though I really do like the shopping aspect of it.
Living along the Southern California coast or visiting, you often will hear surfers talk to each other and discuss the waves. Encinitas is part of the daily discussion for surfers even in Los Angeles. They think nothing of getting up in the morning and heading south to the various beaches that comprise Encinitas for a day of surfing. From the neighborhood Moonlight Beach where there's a Woody car festival, to D Street, Leucadia, Beacon's and Grandview beaches, that's where you'll find the surfers.
Encinitas isn't limited to one sport or one interest, however. There's a beautiful public golf course, and we really like to stop and wander through the Quail Botanic Gardens. Festivals, night life and entertainment abound in what seems like a little town. The Christmas poinsettia that's so popular, has been grown in Encinitas for decades and celebrated in an annual street fair event.
Encintias ties in well to a San Diego vacation. You can access the city by several rail options, or drive down to San Diego, in not much time. Encinitas is close to places such as Oceanside, Carlsbad, Del Mar and Solana Beach, providing access to Legoland theme park, Del Mar horse racing, and lots of dining and shopping.
