Located in Tuolumne County, Jamestown is a small Gold Rush town situated in the Sierra Nevada foothills and is home to some 2,000 people. For tourists, the highlights of the city and region include the Railtown State Historic Park. During the summer weekends you can take an affordable ride on one of the steam trains in the park, which is home to one of America?s last intact, still-operating railroad roundhouses. Railtown 1897 and its authentic props such as actual, historic trains and cars are famous not jmust for their history, but for the shows they've appeared in such as High Noon, Back to the Future 3, and Petticoat Junction. The attraction is open Weekends April to October.
Jamestown is named after Colonel George James. He supposedly brought a wagon filled with supplies and treated everyone to champagne at this Gold Country gateway. Impressed with his gesture, the town often referred to as Jimtown, was given his name. The lawyer operated a hotel and store and worked in the first murder trial in Tuolumne Country in the spring of 1849. Some miners were so outraged with the outcome of the case that they tried to rename their city, but it was too late to do so.
