San Pedro is in a Renaissance, thanks to the money the Los Angeles Port is investing to make its gateway a more pleasurable experience for cruise ship travelers and tourists who discover the charms once known and recognized in attractions such as Ports 'o Call. San Pedro has seen good times, and it has seen decline, but it is back in the game, and offers wonderful daytrips and overnight vacations for those living both locally in Southern California and those visiting from elsewhere.
At first glance, it looks like a working man's blue collar town. As the home to the busy Port of Los Angeles and cruise ship port, there's a local work force that lives in San Pedro, to be sure. But this amazing city lies on the edge of luxurious multi-million dollar estates in Palos Verdes, and features some itself. With views of the Pacific Ocean from homes upon hills, the price range of housing fluctuates, but this Los Angeles region is seeing built mixed use projects that are taking buildings in decline, and transforming them into living units and lofts in the shells of historic properties in the heart of the old-fashioned downtown. For tourists staying overnight or on vacation, you're most likely coming to San Pedro to take a cruise to Mexico, Hawaii or another destination. There are some fun things to see and do on any visit, cruise or not. We like, for instance, the Cabrillo Aquarium next to Cabrillo Beach. It's a charming place with touch tanks for kids--and free admission. You can access the aquarium on weekends via the free bus that parks in a lot next to the replica red car trolley that only costs $1 to ride, unlimited time. This wonderful trolley goes on a track back and forth to the port and Maritime Museum where a new attraction has been built next door.
Fanfare, a $7 million-plus water fountain dances in time to music, much like the Bellagio water show in Las vegas. Designed by the same team that created Bellagio, this water show and park features kid-friendly fountains kids absolutely love to run beside and run their hands into. If you have youngster, watch them delight in the sensation of water. The regularly scheduled water shows are really quite a treat to watch during the afternoon and evening. The Christmas holiday brings a new, seasonal show with holiday music to entertain and put you in the Southern California mood for a sandy, sunny Christmas celebration.
In addition to its beaches, performing arts, train ride, and aquarium, nearby is Trump Golf Course, one of the world's most expensive courses to build. Open to the public, you can play a round of golf on a course that LPGA participants said was tough. The beauty of this course is its amazing hill or mountain top views overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Quite often you can see migrating whales.
With the Harbor Freeway connecting San Pedro with other attractions, you can go to Universal Studios Hollywood, Disneyland, Sea World or a host of attractions.
