40th Street Beach - Newport Beach California Photos
Newport Beach, Calif.--The lifeguard tower is
empty, except for some kids sitting on its planks, looking out to the ocean.
Posted are list of rules on the tower at 40th Street. Here is what they say:
Lifeguard Flag System - Green = Light Conditions; Yellow = Moderate Conditions,
Caution; Red = Heavy Conditions, Danger; Yellow rectangle with a solid, black
circle in center = Board Surfing Prohibited. Call 911 in Case of Emergency.
Board Surfing Prohibited 40th to 44th Street May 1st thru Oct. 31st.
Warning. Diving in ocean, surf or bay is dangerous. Shallow water, submerged
rocks, sandbars, inshore holes can badly injure you. Swimming in ocean or surf
can be hazardous. Strong currents, riptides, surfboards endanger any swimmer.
Waves are powerful. They can badly injure you. Remember! Hazardous and changing
conditions may exist. Be cautious...play safe.
Old fashioned romance and fun
isn't gone in the intimate beaches of Newport Beach. At 40th Street, for
instance, the waves roll in steadily as the rhythms of life meter the days from
each sunrise to sunset. Summers can be crowded and noisy to the point of
distraction but most the year you'll discover the soft sand beaches are a joy.
Joggers on a daily routine, surfers looking for the perfect wave and explorers
who hope to see something new, special or natural, come to beaches along
the numbered streets of Newport. Not finding crowds on most days, they can enjoy
a gentle breeze, the sound of surf and nearly always some seagulls surveying the
sand for a leftover sandwich, piece of an apple, or any scraps that careless
humans tend to ignore and leave behind. For the unseasoned traveler, a picnic
basket or bag of food invites the birds and when you return to your feast, it
may be gone.
Lifeguard services are
offered minimally during the winter months at the Newport Beaches. What you'll
often see is a supervisor lifeguard driving in a truck along the sand,
constantly surveying areas by vehicle, just to make sure that things are OK.
In the winter and throughout the year, it's best to only enter the water if
someone is watching. It's that extra insurance that you may need. The water
temperature at 40th Street and along Newport beaches ranges from around 75 in
the summer to 55 in the winter months. It seldom dips below 58, however.
